We're Molly and Matt—Dabble & Travel! We just spent a month exploring Nepal, from street food to cozy restaurants, so we've got you covered.
Nepali food reflects its location. There are a variety of cuisines based on ethnicity and climate, which relate to Nepal's cultural diversity and geography. This means that no dish is the same, and Nepali food is up there with the top 10 cuisines in the world.
We found all these places (luckily!) because we had internet during our time in Nepal. We downloaded an Airalo eSIM and were able to research the best restaurants in the city of Kathmandu, plus share pictures of our food and adventure.
Here are five dishes you must try in Nepal!
Dal Bhat
Nepal's (unofficial) national dish, literally meaning 'Lentil Soup' (Dal) and 'Boiled Rice' (Bhat), is traditionally served with curried vegetables, sauteed greens, sometimes spicy pickle, curd/yogurt, and delicious gravy. We did not get tired of this dish. We recommend Yala Cafe in Kathmandu.
Momo
Momos are steamed, filled dumplings found in Tibetan and Nepali cuisine. They are also popular in neighboring Bhutan, Bangladesh, and India. The most popular is BUFF (buffalo), but we loved vegetable momo dipped into tomato chutney—10/10!

Sel Roti
We were lucky enough to have this savory donut cooked for us by local villagers. There's a special technique where the batter must be put in a circle by hand on a hot pan to ensure this perfect donut shape. Dipped in honey or sugar or kept savory, these are typically eaten for breakfast.
Shabalep
Shabalep (also spelled "Shapale" or "Sha phaley") is a Tibetan bread dish stuffed with seasoned meat, shaped into semi-circular or circular forms, and deep-fried or pan-fried. These were unreal! Buff Shabalep will stay with us forever. We recommend Du Chuk Ken in Pokhara.
Thukpa
Thukpa is also known as Tibetan chicken noodle soup. It is a real combination of flavors, and, of course, based on the geographical location, these dishes have been passed through families and tweaked in their way. We loved these on a cold winter's day in Nepal when the sun went down.
