Since the launch of the iconic Razr flip phone in the early 2000s, Motorola has been a familiar name in mobile technology. Fast forward to today, and Motorola is still producing reliable, affordable smartphones that balance performance and design.

But when it comes to eSIM technology, how do they measure up? And more importantly, which Motorola phones are eSIM-compatible?

This guide walks you through all you need to know regarding which Motorola phones are eSIM-compatible, how to check if your device has eSIM functionality, and potential solutions if you can't use an eSIM with your current handset.

What Is an eSIM and Why Do They Matter for Travel?

So, what exactly is an eSIM? An eSIM is a digital SIM that's built into your phone, allowing you to get access to mobile data quickly and easily.

These benefits and more make eSIMs particularly useful for travel; therefore, holidaymakers are increasingly ditching physical SIM cards for eSIMs.

Rather than worrying about roaming bills, with eSIMs you're in control of how much data you buy, and you can easily top up when you're running out. eSIMs also remove the need to research, queue for and swap physical SIM cards when you land in a new country.

For anyone who's ever faced eye-watering roaming charges or fumbled with a tiny SIM card at the airport, the shift to eSIMs is a welcome relief.

Are Motorola Phones eSIM Compatible in 2025?

If you're planning to travel soon, have a Motorola phone and are eager to try an eSIM, there are a few things you need to know. Only some Motorola phones support eSIM technology, and these mostly sit within the brand's newer mid-range and flagship lines.

The good news? If you own a recent Motorola Edge or Razr model, you're likely covered, as these series include several eSIM-compatible devices. The Motorola ThinkPhone also supports eSIMs.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to use an eSIM with the following models.

  • Most Moto E series devices
  • Older Moto G series devices
  • Budget Motorola devices released before 2021

This list isn't necessarily exhaustive, as new models are constantly rolling out. If you're still unsure, it's best to double-check with Motorola or your carrier, as some models might have regional restrictions or need firmware updates to unlock eSIM functionality.

How to Check if Your Motorola Phone Supports eSIM Technology

You can check Airalo's regularly updated device compatibility list or follow the steps below to test a phone you already own.

Method 1: Settings Check

  • Go to Settings, tap Network and internet, then select SIMs.
  • Look for the Add eSIM or Download SIM options.
  • If you see these choices, you're good to go.

Method 2: Try the Dial Test

  • Open the dial pad on your Motorola phone and enter *#06#.
  • If you see a 32-digit Embedded Identity Document (EID) number, your device supports eSIM technology.
  • An EID is your eSIM's unique identifier. Without one, your phone can't connect to eSIM networks and therefore isn't eSIM-compatible.

Method 3: Check for an EID Number in Your Settings

Go to Settings, navigate to About phone, then Status.
Look to see if there is an EID listed. If so, your phone is eSIM-compatible.

How to Install an eSIM on Motorola Phones

For those with Motorola eSIM-compatible phones, here's how to install an eSIM on your device. If you choose Airalo as your eSIM provider, the setup process is easy via the Airalo app.

Alternatively, you can try the steps below.

1.) Buy your travel eSIM plan: Choose your destination and data allowance online.

2.) Scan the QR code: Your eSIM details arrive by email or in the app with a QR code.

3.) Find your phone's eSIM setup option: Go to Settings, tap Network and internet, choose SIMs, then Add eSIM.

4.) Scan or enter the code manually: Point your camera at the QR code or type the details manually.

5.) Choose which SIM to use: Select which of your SIMs and eSIMs handle data, calls and texts.

And that's it, the whole process should take just a few minutes, and you'll be connected in the destination of your choice.

What If My Motorola Phone Doesn't Support eSIM Technology?

Switching to eSIMs for travel means you can avoid sourcing, removing and replacing physical SIM cards - a benefit many users appreciate / Adobe Free Stockkelly marken

If your Motorola phone doesn't support eSIM technology, you still have the following options for staying online abroad.

Buy a Physical SIM Card Abroad

Visit local phone shops or airport kiosks to pick up a physical SIM card to replace your current one. You'll need some form of ID or a passport in some countries, and prices can vary dramatically.

Rent or Buy a Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot

Like SIM cards, portable Wi-Fi has its drawbacks. But if you're OK with the upfront cost and keeping the device safe and charged, pocket Wi-Fi is a viable way to stay online on the move.

Upgrade to an eSIM-Compatible Motorola Phone

If you don't want to miss out on the many advantages eSIMs bring, you could upgrade to one of the newer phone models above. If you're due to upgrade soon, going for this option means you can get on board with eSIMs sooner rather than later.

Use Wi-Fi and Offline Resources

Going off the grid is an option for some people when they're travelling. With a little planning ahead, you could rely on free/hotel/cafe Wi-Fi and pre-downloaded maps, tickets, and bookings.

Check Roaming Add-Ons with Your Home Network

Some UK and Ireland networks offer bolt-ons to your standard data package to keep you connected abroad. But checking their roaming fees outside the EU Roam Like At Home zones is essential to avoid shock bills for data you didn't realise you'd used.

Use Power Saving Mode

Activate power-saving mode to extend your device's battery life abroad. Essential when you're navigating new cities all day.

Combine Your Camera With Google Lens

Point your Motorola phone's camera at menus and signs for instant translations - a game-changer in countries where you don't speak the language.

Motorola Gestures

Make two consecutive chopping motions to turn on the torch. Twist the phone twice to open the camera quickly. Place three fingers on the screen and swipe down to capture a screenshot. These shortcuts can be lifesavers when you're in an unfamiliar place.

Save Data With Offline Maps

Download any maps you'll need over a Wi-Fi connection. Your future self will thank you if you get lost without a signal.

Dual SIM Flexibility

Keep your home SIM active for calls and text while using your travel eSIM for data. This is perfect for receiving important calls while avoiding roaming charges.
