How do data amounts and validity periods work for eSIM packages?

Airalo offers eSIM packages for over 200 countries and regions around the world, each with an amount of data you can use for a specific amount of time. Some packages include calls and texts, like our global eSIMs.

The amount of time you can use your package is referred to as its validity period. You can learn more about data usage and validity periods from our answers to the following frequently asked questions. The first thing to know is whether you’re using the public Airalo or the new Airalo.

How do I know which version of the app I’m using?

  • If the app asks you to set up your device once and buy packages, you are using the new Airalo. Simply open the Packages tab (formerly “My eSIMs”) to complete setup. After that, whenever you buy a new package for your desired destination, it will be added to that same device automatically, with no new setup needed.
  • If the app shows individual eSIM installation instructions for each purchase and the My eSIMs tab instead of Packages, you are likely using the public Airalo.

When does my validity period start?

If you’re using the new Airalo

Your package’s validity period starts when your device connects to a supported network in the package’s coverage area.

Since your device is already set up from the initial setup, there’s no separate “install” trigger for validity per package the way there is with the public Airalo. Each new package’s validity is tied to network connection only.

To check the Activation Policy for a package:

  1. Go to the Packages tab.
  2. Select the relevant package.
  3. Tap Package Details.
  4. Find Validity Policy.

If you’re using the public Airalo

The validity period of your eSIM package starts when one of the following happens:

  • When you connect to a supported network in its coverage area
  • When you install your eSIM

For most of Airalo’s eSIMs, the validity period begins when the eSIM connects to a supported network. Please make sure to check the Activation Policy of your package, as this will help you plan when to install your eSIM.

You can check the Activation Policy by doing the following:

  1. Go to My eSIMs > View Details for the relevant eSIM.
  2. Select Package Details.
  3. Find Validity Policy. The relevant information will be listed.

How is an eSIM’s data distributed across the validity period?

The data included with your eSIM is for the entire validity period. It is not distributed equally per day. For example, if you’ve purchased a 1 GB - 7-day eSIM package, you have 1 GB of data to use for the entire 7-day period, not 1 GB of data per day.

Can I use all my data on the first day of validity?

Yes, you can use all your package’s data on the first day, or any day, of your validity period.

  • If you’re using the new Airalo and are concerned about running out, you can simply add another package for the same destination. It will be added to your device automatically and used once your current package runs out (first bought, first used).
  • If you’re using the public Airalo, you can purchase a top-up package for your eSIM if you are concerned about using all of your data before your validity period ends.

If you are using an eSIM package with unlimited data, you will not run out of data during your validity period. Note that full speed is up to 3 GB/day, then speeds slow, and resets every 24 hours.

How can I manage my data usage to avoid running out prematurely?

  • If you’re using the new Airalo, go to the Packages tab in the Airalo app to track your data usage.
  • If you’re using the public Airalo, go to My eSIMs in the Airalo app or use Airalo’s widgets (iOS only) to track your data usage. You will also receive low data notifications when your eSIM reaches 25% and 10% data remaining.

To avoid using too much data, consider limiting activities or apps that consume large amounts of data. For more tips, check out our article on [How can I optimize my data usage?]

What happens if I run out of data before the end of the validity period?

  • If you’re using the new Airalo, simply buy a new package for that destination from the Store, and it’s added automatically to your device.
  • If you’re using the public Airalo, you can purchase a top-up package. To do so, go to My eSIMs > TOP UP for the relevant eSIM.

Can I extend the validity period of my data package?

No, it is not possible to extend the validity period of your data package.

  • With the new Airalo, instead of extending a package, you can buy another package for the same destination ahead of time. It will simply be used once your current one ends.
