2026 Summer Travel Report: Canadians Are Trading Turmoil for Tranquility

Canadians are more geopolitically aware than ever, and it’s reshaping their travel habits in a big way.

It’s been a year. Between the political rollercoaster with our neighbours to the south, turmoil in Mexico and Cuba, and the heavy headlines from the Middle East, Canadians are feeling a bit… geographically claustrophobic. Canadian travellers’ collective response has been a polite but firm pivot toward more calm, cool, and collected corners of the globe. Canadians aren't just looking for a tan anymore; they’re looking for a sanctuary where the only conflict is deciding which fridge magnet makes it home in the carry-on.

As the traditional summer pilgrimage gets a much-needed upgrade, we’re looking toward a travel season defined by the search for stability, more breathing room, and better value. Let’s dive into our predictions for 2026 summer travel, and the trends redefining how we escape it all.

Canada Summer 2026 Travel Predictions

Key Trends for Canadian Travellers

  • Where Everyone You Know Will Be Travelling: Far, Far West
With massive growth in South Korea (+366%) and the Philippines (+73%), travellers are opting for the stability and value of Asia, while also taking advantage of the robust flight path options from Vancouver and Toronto.
  • Where They Won’t Be Going: Typical European Hotspots
Or at least not with the same fervor seen in years past. While Canadians aren’t giving up on Europe, many are reconsidering the traditional hotspots and the growing complexities that come with them. High-demand staples like Italy (-9%) and Portugal (+23%) continue to draw crowds, but their year-over-year growth has slowed. Increasingly, travellers are swapping 40°C Mediterranean heatwaves and heavy crowds for the more temperate, historic charm of Central Europe. This shift reflects a deepening backlash against overtourism, as travellers ditch the overcrowded classics for reimagined European gems like the Czech Republic (+203%), which offers cooler temps and culture without the claustrophobia.
  • The Newest Travel Trend: South American Affordability
After seeing the price tag of a Parisian summer, many Canadians are looking at the map and realizing the Americas have plenty to offer. Destinations like Peru (+58%), Ecuador (+54%), and Colombia (+36%), have Canadians skipping nearby neighbours Mexico and the U.S. and heading further south, absorbing the demand for luxury experiences at a fraction of the cost.
  • The Travel Theme Driving 2026: Value-Driven Immersion
With everything going on *gestures broadly* Canadians just want a moment of peace for not a lot of money, which they’re finding in droves in Vietnam (+35%) and The Philippines (+73%). In these destinations, the Canadian dollar stretches significantly further, allowing travellers to enjoy luxury accommodations and world-class dining for a fraction of what they would spend back home.

Top 10 Fastest Growing Summer 2026 Destinations for Canadians

Deep Dive: The Top 3

  • South Korea (+366%)
This isn't just a trip; it’s a pilgrimage. The "K-Effect" is the strongest driver in our dataset, fueled by a global obsession with K-Pop, K-Beauty, and those K-Dramas that kept us sane last winter. Canadians are heading to Seoul for a hefty dose of world-class skincare, shopping, and scenery.
  • Lebanon (+229%)
Despite a staggering +229% year-over-year surge in popularity, Lebanon’s growth is more likely driven by deep-rooted diaspora connections rather than traditional leisure tourism. As economic, political, and social conflicts continue to drive migration, Canada has emerged as a top destination for Lebanese citizens looking to relocate, resulting in a sizeable and growing Lebanese-Canadian population. Our data suggests that Visiting Friends and Relatives, or VFR travel, is the primary force behind Lebanon’s rise as a summer destination.
  • Czech Republic (+203%)
As Southern Europe struggles with over-tourism and record-breaking heat, Prague has become the cool alternative — literally. It offers the same cobblestone magic as London or Paris but with a significantly more comfortable climate and a price point that doesn't make you weep.

Destinations on the Decline

While certain destinations are riding the sudden popularity wave, others are navigating a dip in demand. Based on 2026 economic shifts and global events, here’s why these former favourites may be seeing a cooling-off period:

A graph depicting Canada's summer destinations on the decline, including the United States, Turkey, and Italy

  • United States (-41%): Between political fatigue and the border-stress factor, Canadians continue to look past their closest neighbours and head further south or across the oceans instead.
  • Turkey (-14%): Geopolitical proximity to volatile airspaces is likely cooling interest as travellers prioritize safe passage.
  • Italy (-9%): The triple threat of too hot, too crowded, and too expensive is finally pushing Canadians toward cheaper, cooler European alternatives. Arrivederci (for now).
  • Scotland (-7%): Concerns over high cost of the UK travel experience have led some Canadians to seek their northern adventures elsewhere.
  • Austria (+2%): Despite its legendary Alpine charm, Austria's growth is stalled as travellers trade traditional land-locked luxury for the cooler weather appeal of Scandinavia and the better value found in neighbouring Central European spots.

Emerging Destinations: The Ones to Watch in 2026-2027

They might not have hit triple-digit growth, but these destinations are quickly climbing the ranks for savvy Canadian travellers:

A graph depicting Canada's destinations to watch, including Ireland, India, and Hong Kong

  • Ireland (38%): Between the surge in direct flight gateways and a growing desire to reconnect with ancestral roots, Canadians are finding that the shortest path to a pint and a story is a quick hop across the Atlantic.
  • India (38%): As travellers pivot away from predictable western hubs, they’re investing in the ultimate long-haul sensory overload, trading familiar cityscapes wellness retreats and once-in-a-lifetime cultural immersion.
  • Hong Kong (37%): Acting as a sophisticated anchor for the Pacific Pivot, HK is reclaiming its title as a primary stop for those seeking a high-energy blend of world-class innovation and legendary street food.

Other Trends Shaping 2026 Travel

  • Pop Culture: "Content-driven tourism" is peaking. Gen Z and Millennials are flocking to South Korea for pilgrimage tours of K-drama filming locations, fueled in part by 2025 media hits like K-Pop Demon Hunters.
  • The Pursuit of Authenticity: Travellers are seeking real connection to food, surroundings, and people, favouring more intentional itineraries over generic tourist experiences.
  • Passion-Led Travel: Whether it’s ancient history, passion travel, or specific hobbies, the itinerary is now built around what the traveller loves, not just where the plane lands.
  • Wellness & Eco-tourism: The Dominican Republic is leading the charge here, with a surge in eco-conscious lodging and stays that prioritize mental well-being.
  • Culinary & History: For Canadians, Mexico remains the gold standard for this trend, with growth driven by a dual obsession with world-class gastronomy and historical exploration at sites like Chichén Itzá.
